Tuesday From 1 until…
May 5, 2008 by epayseur
Hello Gardeners!
The proposed constitutional amendments and draft minutes from our meeting Tuesday should be up here and on the listserv by Monday evening. There is one important item to mention about that now. One of the proposed amendments is for a Secretary/Archivist and if this amendment passes on the secret ballot, then we need to have nominations and a vote for someone to step into this position this year. Ideally, as with the other steering committee members, the member will have gardened with us for at least one year and according to the constitution, be a student. The roles and responsibilities of the Secretary/Archivist are a part of the proposed amendment, and so you can look at them to decide if you or another Maloca member you know would be good for the position.
NOW,
We have a huge day on Tuesday, and I will be there starting from 1pm. So, come whenever you can. We may have our truck load of worm castings delivered and if we are really lucky, and have our tank set properly, then perhaps Tim can get our tank filled. If some of us have not already done so, we’ll need to set the patio stones for our foundation. Then, we’ll need to weed the two remaining strawberry patches, add compost and plant items in between. We need to clean out the shed. We can start measuring the red fencing Tim (York Univ. Grounds Management) brought us. We need to finish building the fourth cold frame (provided we have a drill!); fix the chicken-wire fence/trellis with peas, turn over this plot, mix in sand and compost, and plant cabbages. We’ll need to plant a spring crop of carrots in the garlic bed. We need to plant dill, beets, parsley, Swiss chard, more arugula, spinach, and turnips. Also, we need to get a measurement of each plot (communal and individual). Abhi has done a really nice map, which we will use to transition to the integrated and interactive one Ian will do for us. I am posting it here under the map section, but the numbering of the plots will be different.
Things we can use at the garden:
- Flat, thin wood for signs. One can often find this around dumpsters at York. However, this is a fairly pressing need.
- Fruit and vegetable peels and coffee grinds. Ian and Helena have been working hard to collect these food scraps and we are not far from getting our compost going as it should.
Also, I will have two lists (pasted below) for people to sign up for what interests them the most. This is your opportunity to have greater input in the decisions for the garden and to learn and share knowledge about what we grow. So, please sign up to learn more about specific plants and to be directly involved in the planning of the garden. Even if you are not a member of one of the committees, then you can still make your voice heard by contacting the steering committee member and/or general member responsibly for heading that particular committee. For example, if you are not a member of any general member committee but you have some suggestions for improving the aesthetics of the garden, then you could contact the Landscaping committee.
If you have any questions, please ask them here in the comment section,. I will explain more at Tuesday’s workday. See you all then! –eric
