Gardening Etiquette
Welcome to Maloca and the 2008 growing season! The next few months will involve time, energy, and commitment, but through it all you will be gardening with a supportive community of gardeners and at the end, you will harvest the rich bounty of the York University grounds. Before signing the agreement, please read these few simple rules to gardening at Maloca. Over the coming months, cooperation and coordination will play vital roles in ensuring the smooth functioning, safety, and well being of the garden community. These guidelines will help you as you work through the spring and summer months.
As a member of the Maloca Community Garden, I agree to the following conditions:
1. I will pay an annual $20 fee. This fee (per person) includes:
*membership fee (entitles you to work in the in the garden and reap the benefits at harvest time)
*Maloca garden tool usage fee and a donation to the general upkeep of the garden for future years
2. I will contribute a minimum of 10 hours of work, over the gardening season, toward communal garden efforts (i.e. on scheduled communal work days). However, I understand that this is the minimum in order to share some of the harvest. Beyond this, harvest will be doled out based on time worked in the community garden (i.e. those who have worked more, will get more harvest and those who have worked fewer hours will get less harvest).
3. I will communicate often with other members of Maloca and attend meetings whenever possible.
4. If I must leave the garden for any reason, I will notify the Steering Committee. Moreover, I will return
my key to the shed at the end of the season, unless otherwise authorized by one or more steering committee
members.
5. I will garden according to organic principles. Hence, I will use no synthetic fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides. If in doubt about the organic ’status’ of a product that I wish to use in my garden, I will consult with the rest of the members.
6. I will employ basic principles of water conservation. Hence, I will not conduct overhead watering, will water during cool times of the day, and subject to availability, I will use mulch as appropriate to prevent water loss from the soil.
7. I will tend to the garden as regularly as I am able or in cooperation with other gardeners, insuring that weeds are kept reasonably controlled and that refuse is cleared. If I am maintaining an individual plot, and it becomes extremely unkempt, I understand that subject to prior warning and notification, my plot will be taken over as a communal site.
8. I will conduct my gardening in such a manner so as not to cause negative impact on other gardeners. If I am maintaining an individual plot, I will be careful to plant tall crops in such a manner that they do not deny sun to other plots, and I will ensure that wandering plants (such as melons or squash) do not invade other plots.
9. I will respect the garden’s perimeters and pathways, and will be responsible for guests that I bring to the garden. I understand that I am to avoid stepping on the garden plots and walk only on the footpaths at all times. Pets may be leashed at perimeter. Also, I pledge to ensure any guests I bring to the garden also follow these guidelines.
10. I understand that neither the Maloca Community Garden, nor the owners of the land, are responsible for my actions. I THEREFORE AGREE TO HOLD HARMLESS THE MALOCA COMMUNITY GARDEN AND THE OWNERS OF THE LAND FOR ANY LIABILITY, DAMAGE, INJURY, LOSS OR CLAIM THAT OCCURS IN CONNECTION WITH THE USE OF THE GARDEN BY ME, MY FAMILY, OR ANY OF MY GUESTS.
These guidelines will be regularly reviewed by the Steering Committee and are subject to change.
